Abstract

Introduction: Nocturia is defined as the number of times urine is passed during the main sleep period. Having woken to pass urine for the first time, each urination must be followed by sleep or the intention to sleep. Objective: To investigate factors associated with quality of life, satisfaction with sleep, and health in women with and without nocturia. Methods: A cross-sectional study involving women attending urogynecology outpatient clinics in Petrópolis and Niterói, RJ, Brazil. Clinical, sociodemographic, and lifestyle data were collected and a physical exam performed. The ICIQ-OAB questionnaire, supplemented by a Visual Analog Scale (VAS), as well as the STOP-BANG and WHOQOL-BREF questionnaires, was administered. Nocturia was defined as one or more voids (nocturia 1) and two or more voids (nocturia 2). Statistical analysis included logistic regression modeling, Wald significance test, Shapiro-Wilk normality test, and Spearman correlation analysis. Results: A total of 131 participants were included. There was a statistically significant association of sensation of incomplete bladder emptying (OR=4.897), multimorbidity (OR=4.621), and the care setting in Petrópolis (OR=0.359) with health satisfaction; caffeine consumption and quality of life (OR=0.994), while sensation of incomplete bladder emptying (OR=2.439) and chronic venous insufficiency (OR=0.437) with sleep satisfaction. The relationship between the number of voids and symptom discomfort was positive for both nocturia 1 and nocturia 2, assessed via numerical scale and VAS. Conclusion: Nocturia had a specific impact on quality of life (QoL). Sensation of incomplete bladder emptying was associated with lower health and sleep satisfaction. Multimorbidity was associated with lower health satisfaction.
